How to vet and pick baby formula

How to vet and pick baby formula

🍼Let’s talk baby formula 🍼
When I got pregnant my supply totally dropped so I had to find a good formula for my little dude. I spent days doing research and this is what I’ve found out.

🤍legally all infant formulas must contain seed oils for their PFUA content and folic acid. If it doesn’t have them it cannot be marketed as an infant formula. As it doesn’t meet FDA requirements

With my son I did raw goat milk until I could find a formula I was comfortable with. I do not recommend doing this unless you don’t have another option; goat milk does not fit all of the nutritional needs of a baby. For me this was a temporary thing while I waited for the formula

There are homemade options via. Mt. Capra and Weston A price. I would have done this option but I was on a time crunch & it can be expensive up front so; We settled on serenity A2 toddler formula.
It’s marketed to toddlers because this formula doesn’t have seed oils or folic acid it has folate and olive oil, coconut oils, Algal oil, ect. To meet PFUA and omega requirements to use for an infant.
this is what serenity’s FAQ says “This product is not an infant formula so we are not allowed to recommend this product for infants. Our Toddler Formula contains the required FDA nutrients for infant formula, however, it has not yet gone through the FDA evaluation process that is required for infant formula. So until then, we can only recommend our Grass Fed A2 Whole Milk Toddler Formula for children ages 12 months and up, or as directed by a health professional.”

In my research for formulas I learned that if it’s not serenity or homemade or raw goat milk it will always be a better not best situation. So I’m going to tell YOU what to look for and how to navigate finding a formula that’s better

🤍 seed oils can be inflammatory right? But some ARE worse than others. Ex. Canola is far worse than sunflower seed oil. So first thing you will do is look at the seed oils in the formula. Find one with the least toxic seed oils.
🤍 next you will look at vitamin content. Not every vitamin is created equal. There are forms that aren’t as easily processed or absorbed as others ex. Cyanocobalamine vs methylcobalamine
🤍 then look at additives

🤍Nutritional content; baby formula has to meet certain requirements to fit a babies needs. This accounts for sugars, fats, calories, proteins, ect. At minimum a baby formula should be 20 calories per oz.
per FDA guidelines these are the requirements you’d look for

Key Nutrient Requirements

  • Protein: 1.8–4.5 grams per 100 kcal (or 1.2–3.0 g/dL)

  • Fat: 3.3–6.0 grams per 100 kcal

  • Linoleic acid: Minimum 300 mg per 100 kcal

  • Vitamins: Includes A, D, E, K, B-complex vitamins, and folic acid, with specified minimums and maximums (e.g., Vitamin A: 250–750 IU, Vitamin D: 40–100 IU)

  • Minerals: Iron (0.15–3.0 mg/100 kcal), calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, copper, iodine, selenium, sodium, potassium, and chloride

From there you make your choice on what formula to use. I hope this helps! 🍼🤍
